Canadian Aces of WW2

Canadian Wing by Robert Taylor
Canadian Wing by Robert Taylor

___________________________________________________________

Scoring goes - Destroyed / Probably Destroyed / Damaged

If one of those categories shows two numbers separated with a hyphen ( - ) the exact number is not known & the score is considered to be within that range.

According to Christopher Shores, the RAF decided that on 12 August 1940 an "Unconfirmed Destroyed" would be reclassified as a "Probably Destroyed." Here you will find early "unconfirmed" claims represented in the "probable" spot.

OTG = On The Ground, OTW = On The Water, KIA = Killed In Action,
MIA = Missing In Action, KiFA = Killed in a Flying Accident, D = died

It should be noted that although we take great care to make these scores as accurate as possible, the main reason for this site is to put faces to names, not to be a definitive list of scores.

Friendly Ordinance (Beer Run to Normandy) by Ronald Wong
Friendly Ordinance (Beer Run to Normandy) by Ronald Wong

Factory Fresh Spitfire Mk IXe's make their way to the forward airfields of Normandy carrying kegs of beer. The English brewery of Heneger and Constable donated fresh beer for the troops fighting in Normandy, and someone came up with the idea of strapping the beer kegs to the underwings of the Spitfires that were being shipped to the forward airfields. The troops loved the freshly delivered, cold beer, but as with all good things, the British Ministry of Revenue and Excise stepped in and notified the brewery that it was in violation of the law by exporting beer without paying the taxes on it. And that was the end of that.
Read a short, first-hand account by Lloyd Berryman about the first beer run Johnnie Johnson's Canadian Wing ever did here. Lloyd does not remember the name of the 3rd pilot but says Murray Havers was in on the show.

  _______________________________________________

There are some American names on the list above as opposed to the list below. The reason they are there is because they enlisted into the RCAF and stayed with their "brothers" in the RCAF for their entire service and did not transfer to the US forces. The men below were either just assigned to RCAF squadrons or transferred to the US forces when the opportunity came.

This incomplete list of "Honorary Canadian Aces" is made up of Aces who were in the RCAF at some time during WW2 (I've read that approximately 10% of the RCAF enlistments when WW2 started were Americans), and some that immigrated to Canada after the war. Johnny Johnson, Mike Judd and Douglas Bader however, commanded Canadian Wings and some were given "Honorary Canadian" status by the Canadians who served with them. In fact, Johnson even wore a "Canada" patch on the shoulder of his uniform.
Also, the scores shown represent career totals and may not be RCAF-service (or even ww2) specific. In the case of 'Whitey' Dahl, neither, but he did fly for the RCAF during ww2 (although not in a combat roll) and he was considered an Ace ... at least by the newspapers ;^)
What's a Canerican? Well, it's like an Americanadian except a Canerican was born in Canada and moved to the States & an Americanadian was born in the US and moved to Canada ... may or may not be an actual dual citizen. I made up these words (although I probably was not the 1st to do so) for people like myself who feel equally at home in either country. Americanadians & Canericans know who they are)
Also, in some cases I don't know the details of the claims (which are listed here on this page thus: destroyed, probably destroyed, damaged, then OTG stats if any) so I wouldn't fight any duels to the death over these numbers since there's just no way to be 100% sure. After all, I wasn't there. BUT, you can bet your @ss that we're digging up more details every day!

And another thing ...
If you have a photo that's better than one you see here,
or better yet, a photo you don't see here, how about !?!
If you have corrections/additions/suggestions, feel free to click that link and suggest away.

THANKS

And Special Thanks to Janet & crew over at the Canadian Forces Joint Imagery Unit
