I Would Have Gone On And On
Hamilton Charles (Deryk) Upton, DFC in the Battle of Britain
By William G. Chrystal
Bill Chrystal has done a great job of gathering information on a man that has been largely forgotten to the history books. By determined detective work, he located family members, friends, newspapers and official documents that allow him to tell the tale of this lost Battle of Britain hero. Deryk, was born in the UK but spent a large part of the 1930’s living in Canada. In 1939 he left to join the RAF. He flew valiantly in the Battle of Britain (where he shot down over 9 enemy planes) and later instructed new pilots.
At war’s end, he transferred to the RCAF and returned to Canada. He stayed with the RCAF until 1953 then moved on to other endeavors, finally settling in Truro Nova Scotia where he died in 1965.
Bill Chrystal has put Deryk’s war exploits and subsequent life, with all its turmoil, in a well written, easy to read and informative format that I enjoyed thoroughly and recommend highly.
Hats off to Bill for his work
Joe
